Sony DAV X10 or DAV IS10

Both look neat and one is standard size and the other compact. The X10 has only two front speakers BUT the IS10 has tiny little speakers. I don't like big speakers of tall speakers so thats fine. I know with Sony getting a multi region one is hard and at the very least expensive..for the IS10 another £70...its not essential and I can always convert any DVDs to no region and PAL as I can't tell if either of these play NTSC as well as PAL. Sony tell you nothing about that

Trouble is which one to go for. Both seem to get good write ups so if anyone with either of these can give some tips I would be grateful.

Re: Sony DAV X10 or DAV IS10

Hello mate. In terms of sound and PQ I've only seen and heard the IS10 and its quite impressive...it doesn't go very loud tho, and whilst ideal for TV / films / games etc, I'd struggle to recommend it for mainly music use.

In terms of which system out of the two you mention please bear in mind one key fact (which almost every magazine review seems to forget....)

You won't get 5.1 surround sound from a 2.1 system.

No way. nada.

Wwhat you'll get is a semi-surround effect only....and if thats all you want, then fine.

If you want proper surround sound, go for the IS10 and have done with it.

The X10 will give clear, quality, rich sound and if that sounds like your thing, go for it - but it won't surround you like the IS10 will.

A lot of 2.1 systems get average reviews because they are judged on how well they do surround sound.....which to my way of thinking completely misses the point.

Whichever way you go, enjoy.

Re: Sony DAV X10 or DAV IS10

Top man.....thats exactly the sort of stuff I was looking for. I must admit the size of the sub woofer was a bit daunting on the IS10...I had a look at one today but the set itself is just so neat and the speakers really are the size of golf balls.

I prefer 5.1 and agree with what you say about the 5.1/2.1 "debate....

I'm sure the IX10 does a great job and its a close call as I could probably live with the pretend surround sound although my Sony LCD has the same system and its just not that good out of a TV of course. So its the IS10 for me...even with a sub woofer thats bigger than my sofa.

Many thanks......appreciate the response and the info...

Re: Sony DAV X10 or DAV IS10

Hi Top Gazza,

I bought an IS-10 a coupl eof months back and dont regret it Like you I didnt want large speakers dominating the room so the small golf ball speakers were perfect, and they can still deliver quite a puch, mine fronts are actually balanced on the top of my plasma they are so small

The Sub woofer can really boom, but does need to be placed next to the TV as some of the mid range sound comes from it as the centre speaker isnt powerfull enough for it.

Im not sure how much you can get it, for but I bought it from digital point for £335 inc a HDMI cable, but I just looked and its now £409 good for me but bad for you I suppose. Also dont forget to order an optical cable so that you can connect it to your console or Sky box.

If you plan to connect the optical to more than 1 source then you will need to get a splitter as the IS-10 only has 1 optical input.

cheers
Dave

Re: Sony DAV X10 or DAV IS10

Cheers Dave...another thumbs up for the IS10. Luckily I can place the sub woofer almost next to the TV, Sony 32D3000 behind a cabinet so its not too bad. Prices go up and down on this stuff so I guess its just pot luck...

I have a Sky + box which I think has an optical socket. Is this better than HDMI ?

I have Sky HD so use HDMI for picture and Optical for audio.

Wow £299 bite their hands off for that price

Re: Sony DAV X10 or DAV IS10

it's a shame that it's a £100 more at superfi because they only chrge an extra £10 to make it multi region.

The price from DigitalDirect looks good, does anyone know if it is possible to do the multi-region conversion yourself?

Is it a case of finding/downloading/playing a firmware upgrade DVD in the machine, or even trusty keystrokes on the remote?
