Re: panasonic SC-PT860
'Wireless ready' means you will have to buy a wireless module around £80

Beast? you must be kidding me. I own the previous PT850 System, this one has no improvement over the previous model and still DOES NOT do DTS through optical only DD5.1.
Save urself some trouble and go for a proper 5.1 system like HT series without the rubbish DVD play back ability or u will find urself very annoyed(like me) in the blu-ray era.

You need an SH-FX67. The only place i've found it in the UK is empire direct for £100.99 - thats not a typo, the price is that strange!

Re: panasonic SC-PT860
Mate if like the normal people in this worl, you want to watch a good film with a good sound and a good picture, you wont go wrong with the 860.
I too have an 850 and cant moan at all, the sound is crisp, the picture is good( now i have it hdmi connected).
The 860 offers the ability to put an i pod on it and have the sound come through the speakers,
You wont be dissappointed.

Yea, the sound quality might be ok but I wont say the same for picture quality. I own a Sony XBR 52', a PS3, and PT850W (here in NZ this unit only comes in wireless format) 1080p dvd conversion is miles away from the PS3, the whole picture is pixelated and the color is just dull. I am not a hifi geek but still a HUGE difference. Thats why I am turning away from the builtin dvd player and use PS3 to do the job. Well you know the rest of the story, the unit is useless when it comes to optical sound input.

DTS is one of the compulsory audio format for dvd/bluray. Since this system only does dvd you obviously want to get something that supports DTS through optical input so when bluray players become cheap you can just buy a standalone one and hook it up to the system use it as a 5.1 surround reciever. DTS has got higher bit-rate than Dolby Digital which is suppose to be superior.
The HT series(at least here in NZ) is a Panasonic 5.1 surround sound reciever system which instead of having a reciever/dvdplayer combo you get a much better standalone reciever as the main unit(with multiple HDMI input and heaps more optical/coaxal connections). Of course being a reciever it is much better than the combo one in PT series.
My recommendation is get the HT series(latest one is SC-HT65 I think), buy the wireless unit if you want and get a cheap standalone 1080p DVD player and wait for the blu-ray to drop price. The whole thing should actually cost less than the PT850 and is much more future proof.

Re: panasonic SC-PT860
I have just had a listen to one and after putting Shrek 2 through it, although the sub & speakers sounded good the centre speaker sounds very tinny and like your hearing it through a tube. I haven't yet had a chance to read the manual. Is there an option to adjust the centre speaker sound (not volume).
What do others think?
