dorm room noob

Im looking to kit myself out for my dorm room next year. I will be renting a house with friends and have a large ish bedroom to do as i please with. appart from any diy/drilling etc.

just to give you an idea of what its like at the moment. I have a 22" lcd pc monitor which i have my pc connected to for watching downloaded videos etc. I also connect my xbox 360 to this via VGA cable and use it to play games and dvds.
My audio at the mo is a set of 5.1 logitech speakers i got off ebuyer about 3 years ago for around £60. They just plug in via 2.5mm jacks to the pc. I have my xbox connected to them also but just to aux in. so only really getting 2.0/2.1 for the xbox. which is quite annoying as i want 5.1 for my gaming eventually.

So now being a poor student etc im trying to find out what i need in advance so i can save up and get some new equipment.

So basically over the next year im gonna be expanding my AV setup allot.
I want to be able to play high quality music/games/dvds from my pc and xbox through the system.
I have no idea where to start?

think i will need to get some sorta multi av amp?

i was thinking to first get any amp style hardware, that can handle the xbox and pc audio. with just a set of 2 bookshelf speakers?
then when more money comes in buy a few more speakers to expand to 5.1

then when i get more money probably get a nice 40" plasma/lcd for xbox and dvd playing.

Is the best way to set about slowly gaining the setup i want?
not looking to spend millions of pounds either
not including the tv not really wanting to spend much more than £200-300
