Philips HTS3357 - Xbox 360 surround sound

Hi i have just bought A Philips HTS3357 ( http://www.amazon.co.uk/Philips-HTS3.../dp/B000RT88P8)

My question is will i get 5.1 surround sound purely from the xbox-tv HDMI connection playing through the DVD player, or do i need to connect direct (in which case presumably i need an optical-digital audio converter - any thoughts?).

Re: Philips HTS3357 - Xbox 360 surround sound

no,you wont get audio through hdmi with that system..

what xbox 360 is it you have?
if its the premium, you will have to buy the hdmi lead/audio dongle pack,as the xbox doesnt allow hdmi, and component/vga leads to be used at the same time,so you cant use the optical out,on those leads.
the hdmi lead/dongle pack, contains,an hdmi lead, and what looks like the stub of a component/vga cable, but only has analogue and digital audio outputs on it,and retails at about £30.
this will allow you to use hdmi video, and have optical audio for 5.1.

you could butcher a cheap vga/component cable, removing the case,so that the hdmi lead, and the newly made "dongle" can be used together.

if you have an elite, all you do is plug the dongle in(the elite comes with one in the box),and the hdmi lead into the tv directly, then plug an optical lead, into the philips surround.

if the philips surround doesnt have optical audio in,then yes,you would need an optical - coax convertor, but thats only if the philips has coax audio in.

personally,if it doesnt have those inputs, send it back, and use the little extra you would spend on a convertor,to buy a system that has an optical audio in.

Re: Philips HTS3357 - Xbox 360 surround sound

Thanks for the reply. Fortunately it's an elite so i guess i need to convert my optical signal from my dongle to digital for the DVD player - will check prices and decide what to do then.

Thanks again

Al

hi, i just wondered if you could answer this question for me about this system. I have ordered one, (for £69 thought it was a bargain) and just wanted to know if it is possible to have the tall boy speakers at the front?

Are the speakers hard wired into the system or can the wires be extended etc? How long would you say the cables are for each speaker. I only have a small living room but dont think the wire for the front speakers will be long enough to reach the back of my room?

Hi - £69 seems to be a very good price - can you tell me where you purchased it from? Thanks

They are hardwired into the back of the speakers and the front speaker wires are not overly long so like me youll probably have to extend them (solder for best possible connection)
