Help with Philips MCD988 please

Hi,

kinda need a little help on a "how to" matter.

I bought a Philips
MCD988 2.1 system but can't for the life of me get the system to play the sound from the TV.

Its connected via HDMI cable - kinda thinking this is purely for playing DVDs/viewing pics etc.

So, how do I get to hear whats on the TV through the system?

Read the instructions and think its something to do with this paragraph but I dont really understand it:

"To hear the TV channels through this DVD system, use the audio cables (white/red-not supplied) to connect Aux In jacks to the corresponding Audio Out jacks on the TV".

Maybe a daft question but nonetheless I neeeeeeeeed help.

Thanks in advance

Daren

On rear of TV you should have phono out (red/white) use these sockets to your amp

And here is the cable you require:

http://www.kenable.co.uk/product_inf...243928c10bd975

Phono connectors to tv and jack to aux socket on amp.

Hope this helps

Re: Help with Philips MCD988 please

daren_1971, you are using HDMI cable? Shouldnt this carry audio/video on one cable? I'm no expert at all but P16 of pdf manual says 'To stop the sound coming from your TV speakers set DIGITAL OUPUT to 'SPDIF OFF'
I've just ordered one of these as well

Not from the TV it doesnt, he wants to listen to normal TV broadcast through the Philips thus he needs the cables/connections advised.

However you are correct that he doesnt need DVD sound going from the amp to the TV so can be turned off as per your instructions

Re: Help with Philips MCD988 please

Hi,

thanks to those who've replied, however.....

I just can't seem to get it to work.

In the box there was a cable that looked like the one suggested.

One end has a red, white and yellow connector. The other is a 3.5mm jack.

I've connected the r/w/y end to the tv and the jack to the system, no joy.
I've used the supplied scart like adapter for the r/w/y end and still no joy.

I've even connected the r/w/y to the tv and the jack to the aux in and aux out and nope, nothing.

And the remotes stop working now. Kinda hoping new batteries will work but surely the ones supplied would have lasted longer than a day (esp when it hasnt been used?!?!?!?).

Its going back soon! Aarrgghh.

Can anyone suggest what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks once again

Re: Help with Philips MCD988 please

darren, mine arrived today. A bit of a pain to set up to be honest. It wasn't set up to output hdmi so I got sound but no picture for a long while until I worked out I needed to set it up using another connection (component) so I could see the system menu and then enable hdmi. It worked fine after that

Anyway back to your problem. The cable in the box you mentioned is to connect to the scart adapter and then into your TV and I'm not sure it will work for this purpose. To get sound from the TV you need the cable kentish_lad advised which you need to connect AUX IN on the unit and AUDIO OUT jacks on the TV. You also need to switch the source to aux, I had a cable lying about and I've got it to work now. Overall impressions: - very good upscaled dvd picture, compared to 4 year old £20 Medion dvd player!!
Sound: Pretty good, huge sub.

Hey,

thats great thanks. I'll give that a bash after buying the right cable.

This component connection you used, cable in the box or another cable required?

The TV has the red, white and yellow connectors, is this what I'm connecting the lead to?

Really appreciate your help.

Daren aka thicko!!

Re: Help with Philips MCD988 please

darren, I had the component leads already but you can just as easily use the scart adapter in the box to get a picture and then go into the video options and turn the HDMI on. The upscaled 1080i picture looks really good to my eyes with a £10 hdmi cable and the sound exceeded my expectations. This thing can go loud! The wife isnt overly happy with the size of the sub woofer though!

Re: Help with Philips MCD988 please

Daren, you need the Phono cables i mentioned before, At the TV Make SURE you are connecting to 'AUDIO OUT' and NOT 'IN', connect the other end to 'AUX' and select that input on the amp remote.

If you use the supplied Scart > Phono make sure you connect to a scart on the TV that has audio out, AV2 usally is

Re: Help with Philips MCD988 please

Think its going back.

I have managed to hook it up via the sky box using the supplied r/w/y lead (but minus the yellow lead as theres no connector for it on the sky box) and when there's no sound from the TV (ie when theres a change of adverts etc) there's a really loud humming noise.

Unless its me Im guessing this ones f**ked.

Having said that, when the box arrived i kinda got the impression it may have been opened before and surely the supplied batteries should have worked a little longer, they gave up on day one.

Thanks for all the replies, I am v grateful.
