Sony DAVS 880....repair costs?

Hi all, recently joined the site and am after some help!

Got a Sony DAVS 880 system that has never worked properly since I got it about 18 months ago.......it has the common problem of playing a DVD for about an hour and then playback stutters and sound does the same......its ok at playing CD`s though?

Has anyone had theirs repaired that had similar problems and how much did it cost? Where did you take it? I am in Urmston, Manchester, so any help greatly appreciated

Does it do this on original DVDs or just copied ones? I have some experience of these units skipping in the last 30 minutes of DVDRs but are usually fine with commercial "pressed" discs.

Hi PlasmaVirgin........it skips/judders on brand new quality DVD`s (but seems to play CD`s without a problem)........always seems to happen after the same length of time has elapsed, like it is a heat build up issue?

Would be interested in what the repair cost is and if it lasts or is just a temporary fix?

I bought my 880 several years ago; it did that, sent it back. They said they replaced the DVD itself but I don't believe them.
When I placed the unit in the glass fronted cabinet that holds my Sony Wega the 880 grew so hot it was hard to hold your hand on top of it so I had to put it out in the open. Even now, if I leave the DVD box on it it still cuts half an hour off the 2-hour watching time before the stuttering starts. A beautiful unit but the most inefficient heat dispersal I've ever seen.
I'm going to replace it soon.

I've had experience of some units skipping once the laser device wears out. This usually first manifests itself on copied disks as they are not as high quality as commercial pressed disks, it then happens on commercial disks too and CDs are usually the last to show any issues.

I might be able to help you out with a replacement 880 receiver - just send me a PM if you're interested.

Both blobster and I seem to have had this problem from new - and I don't use mine enough for it to have worn out.
Interesting offer you make though. Of course, it's blobster's thread so it's his choice.
