svideo over component plugs.

My 5.1 is connected to my telly (50" plasma) via component leads.

Both have svideo connections. Is this a better way or worse?

(5.1 is older and does not have hmdi)

Cheers,

Ted.

Re: svideo over component plugs.

If you mean component - which is, 3 x RCA phono cables for picture only typically coloured red green and blue, then this is the best protocol, in theory. The difference with SVideo isn't massive, though. And of course, if you prefer one over the other, then that's the one to use.

Re: svideo over component plugs.

Just to illustrate as many people still use incorrect terminology (I know I did at first)

component (video only)

http://www.cliff.com.au/images/customcable/v3canare.jpg

S-video (video only)

http://pics.spoonfeeder.com/AieFTPFi...3U54QK35TM.jpg

COMPOSITE (audio and video)

http://www.maplin.co.uk/images/Full/l81ab.jpg

They also run in that order, from best to worst.....

Re: svideo over component plugs.

Thanks guys.

From what you have said, I cannot improve on with the system I have.

Looks like a new 5.1 with hmdi then!

Ted.

Re: svideo over component plugs.

What I am still not sure on tho, is you say your "5.1" is connected to your TV using component... I don't understand? Component is a video signal, nothing to do with audio, which is what 5.1 is : 6 channels of audio...

Re: svideo over component plugs.

Sorry.

Thick as cack!

I was looking at the Xbox connection.

5.1 is connected to the telly via scart.

Will svideo be better than this?

Ted.

Hold on a minute.

"SCART" is a type of connector, not a signal protocol. SCART can carry Composite, SVideo and RGB (and in rare cases, Component) for video as well as audio.

Of these, only RGB will be better than SVideo via a separate connection. Whether yours is RGB will depend on how you have your equipment set up. RGB only happens if all of these are true:

- source device set to output RGB (usually a menu item)
- use a RGB enabled socket on source device
- fully wired SCART cable (most are, but always worth checking)
- use a RGB enabled SCART input on the screen
- (if necessary) screen set to receive RGB via this input (usually automatic but worth checking)

Lack of ANY ONE of these means composite which will be worse than SVideo.

Re: svideo over component plugs.

i dont think there are many 5.1 systems that connect with composite only through scart, and also neither does an xbox, which is rgb, through scart.
therefore, when i said "No",i meant RGB scart would be better than svideo.

Re: svideo over component plugs.

Blimey charley!

I think that the best way to improve on what I have then is to get an all in one (I know nothing about separates so would be a waste of time) with hmdi connections.

Connect to telly via hmdi from 5.1 but which would I plug my xbox into?

Ted.

I'll lay £1 to 1p - they ALL will, if any one of the five things I mention isn't in place.

Still not sure what this "5.1" is tho - are we talking about a DVD player?

Re: svideo over component plugs.

We're here in an "All-in-Ones" forum, so a combination DVD/Sound system would be a fair assumption, IMO.
