Connecting MP3 player & PC to home cinema

I have a Sony HT-SS600 and am trying to connect my PC and MP3 player to it via the optical connection. I have bought an adapter which allows the 3.5 connection on the MP3 player/PC to connect to the optical cable.

However, when trying to play music through either the PC or MP3 no sound comes out the speakers. Any idea why this is? Possibly a dodgy adapter?
