Question Sony DAV-DZ230 - audio input query

I have just spent some of my hard earned cash on a Sony DAV-DZ230 system. Previously I had been running a Sky+ box and Philips DVD recorder through a cheapo Durabrand (Asda own brand) surround speaker system. (Audio) Connections into the Durabrand subwoofer were simple 2-phono to 2-phono leads.

The problem I have with my new Sony system, and I honestly cannot believe this problem, is that it does not have a single audio input, other than a 3.5mm input on the front. I didn't even bother looking to see if it did before buying, as I (perhaps stupidly) assumed it would have at least 1 set of phono inputs.

Now, before I take the system back to the store and have to spend even more on a system with the necessary connections, can someone confirm to me what would be the end result of me connecting the phono outputs of the Sky+ box to the 3.5mm input of the Sony via a simple 2-phono to 3.5mm lead? Am I likely to get more than just 2-channel sound out? (Can't test myself, coz haven't got such a lead yet).

Thanks in advance!

Re: Sony DAV-DZ230 - audio input query

You can'y use the 3.5mm socket - this is for auto calibration.

The system is designed so you can hear audio from any source displayed on your screen. Select "TV" using the function button, the sound from whatever is displayed on tv screen is sent down the scart cable in to your DAV system.

Re: Sony DAV-DZ230 - audio input query

I'm now even more confused...

According to the user manual, the 3.5mm input is 'AUDIO IN / A.CAL MIC', hence why I thought of using this as an input from the Sky+ box

I have tried setting it up as described in the user guide, but cannot work out how your instructions above would work. Surely the scart socket on the DAV is an output, not an input?

The rear panel connectors are as follows :-

1. Speaker Jacks - obviously irrelevant
2. DMPORT - again irrelevant
3. AM Terminal - again irrelevant
4. Coaxial FM Terminal - again irrelevant
5. Scart Socket - marked as ' Output (To TV) jack'
6. HDMI OUT jack - again only an output

Then there is the front panel 3.5mm socket, as above.

SO...back to the question in hand...how am I supposed to get sound from the Sky+ box to the DAV without resorting to the 3.5mm socket???

Re: Sony DAV-DZ230 - audio input query

Connect the Dav to the tv with scart (the sky box needs to be connected to the tv via separate scart lead).

Select "TV", and whatever your watching on the tv (bbc/itv/sky/etc) will be output from the DAV. The scart socket on the DAV is an input/output, which is how this works.

Rather than trying to get your head round this, just go and try it.

Re: Sony DAV-DZ230 - audio input query

OK. I took a leap of faith and connected it as per your instructions. I am now experiencing TV sound through the DAV. However, it is still not quite right...

Sound changes depending on analogue TV programme selected, as you would expect.

Sound remains on current analogue TV programme even when an alternative input is selected - i.e. Sky+ connected to TV by scart (Ext1) is not heard through DAV. What is heard is current analogue TV programme.

SO...just to confirm...Sky+ connected to TV by Scart. DAV connected to TV by both HDMI and Scart.

We're nearly there!!! :D

Re: Sony DAV-DZ230 - audio input query

Well at least you're half way there!

Is it a Sony tv?

I can't comment on other makes (but they may be similar), but if it is a Sony, there are some adjustments to make on the tv menu.

Scart socket 2 on the tv is usually the one outputting audio, so this is the one the needs connecting to the DAV. In the tv menu you can choose what is output, ie Analog / Digital / AV1 / Current. You need to change this to 'current' (or whatever it's called), so that anything displayed on the tv's screen has it's audio sent to the scart socket.

Re: Sony DAV-DZ230 - audio input query

Assuming XBox is connected by scart to TV(?) it should just be a case of connecting DAV to TV by scart, and setting the output of that scart to AUTO so whatever is shown on TV is played through DAV.

What TV do you have?

Re: Sony DAV-DZ230 - audio input query

I have this sony dav230 and a television crt Philips 9416 (3 scarts, 1 s-video). I am waiting for the Epson tw700 in one week.
In the wall (for the connection with the pj) there are cables dvi, rca and s-video.
How do I make the connections in order to see tv channels from pj while hearing from sony?

Well, to be honest, I'm not sure what options are available on your Samsung. On my Sony, there is an option to set the output of Scart 2 (the scart socket my DAV is connected to) to AUTO (i.e. whatever is showing onscreen). It might be similar on your set, but I'm not sure.

Re: Sony DAV-DZ230 - audio input query

Sorry for jumping in on this, but this thread relates to a problem I've had. I have a Sony PS3, a Sony KDL40W200 and a Sony DAV-DZ230 system. When I got the DZ230, I didn't check to make sure there was a digital audio connection so I could have sound coming through from the PS3 through the DZ230. I've read through the tread, but can't get sound coming through at all.I'd appreciate any help/advise?
Thanks

Unfortunately, you won't get proper DD 5.1 as there are no digital inputs - FULLSTOP. You won't even get stereo/DPL II, as I'm assuming you're using a hdmi cable. Sound won't be output from the tv's scart socket because you're inputing a digital signal via hdmi.

The only solution to get sound is connecting via scart instead of hdmi.

Re: Sony DAV-DZ230 - PS3 HDMI audio input

Hi,
Found this post last night whilst trying to connect a PS3 to DV230 and Sharp LCD TV. I was also thinking of using the microphone socket as it was the only input I could see besides the DMPort and I didn't know what it was. Thankfully found this post and got the sound from the TV very quickly.
Nice of Sony not to mention the scart is also an input -> Thanks Simon1!!!

I tried using the scart socket from the PS3 but got no picture or sound. Looking at the PS3 instructions I noticed that to have HD output the HDMI connector must be used (I have a 21" CRT) so no way could the scart be used just to obtain surround sound.
Changed back to HDMIBut no sound from DV230. I then looked at table of the functions of each port on TV and noticed SCART1 only provided sound out for DTV and SCART2 provided sound out for other devices. Switched over and sound from PS3 thru the DZ230!
So depending on your TV you can have sound out thru Scart from HDMI!

Hop this helps someone else.

Thumbs down Re: Sony DAV-DZ230 - audio input query

I'm having similar problems hooking up a 360 to the sound system. My old man bought a package from Comet that included a 32" Sony Bravia KDL-3S3000 and the DVD system in question. Now, having read through the thread I've been able to get his BT Vision box to come through the speakers, as well as the analogue and digital TV signals the TV recieves - but no matter what I try, I can't get sound from the 360 to come though the speakers. Am I missing something really obvious?

I've got the DZ230 hooked up by both HDMI and SCART2, the BT Vision box connected by SCART, and the 360 in another HDMI port (have also tried component). From what I've read in this thread and others, it should be good to go - but for some reason it just won't play ball.

Anyone else experience this or similar, and how did you get around it? Any help would be very much appreciated

Re: Sony DAV-DZ230 - audio input query

Well, strangely enough, I am now in a similar position myself, having got everything to work a few months ago! Now, like you, I'm adding an Xbox 360 into the mix.

My ideal set-up will be connecting the 360 via HDMI, but can't yet as don't have a free HDMI port on the TV. Therefore, until I get a HDMI switch, the 360 is connected via Composite.

Anyways, with my current set-up, I do have sound from my 360 playing through my DAV. Maybe this is because the Composite input is being treated like a Scart input, in the same way as your BT Vision box?

Theoretically you'd have thought that, irrespective of input type, whatever source material is displayed on the TV screen would have its sound played through the DAV, but perhaps this isn't the case with the 'proper' HD inputs?

Composite works OK, so a tick on that front, but I myself will be eagerly watching this thread to see if anyone can get sound working through HDMI.

Following on from my post above... It would appear that connecting a 360 via HDMI won't result in sound through the DAV.

So, it seems that there is a sacrifice to be made...either connect via Composite and experience sound through the DAV, or connect via HDMI and make do with sound through the TV.

(Can't comment on Component, as don't have have this lead)

Re: Sony DAV-DZ230 - audio input query

Hi folks,

I'm new to the forum and am looking for some advice re the Sony DAV-DZ230 which I purchased today.
I have it connected to my TV (Toshiba 37C3030) via scart to AV2 with my Sky Box connected to the TV via separate scart to AV1.
The DVD plays fine through the surround system but I'm unable to get either normal TV or Sky audio through the DAV.
I've tried pressing the TV input button on the remote but to no avail.
Does anyone know if my TV is not compatable and thats the reason the DAV is not picking up the audio? Or are there other setting changes I need to make?
Any help is much appreciated.
Cheers.

Pat, this might sound obvious, but have you pressed the 'Function' button on the DAV remote to switch to 'TV'? When 'TV' is selected, whatever is showing on screen should have its sound output through the DAV.

Re: Sony DAV-DZ230 - audio input query

It can be done, just recently had the same problem myself,

- Connect PS3 to TV via HDMI
- Connect PS3 to DAV via scart
- On the PS3 in system settings can change how audio is outputed - need to select output via scart (or something similar).

Downsides are have to change cables when want to output audio from the tv/sky and it isn't 5.1.

Regarding the 5.1, is there any way of getting external devices to connect to the DAV in such a way that would give 5.1? Guess I should have done my research first and checked for an opticial input!

Re: Sony DAV-DZ230 - audio input query

Hi guys,

Just read through both pages and I'm still lost! (Not the sharpest tool in the box..)

OK I have a standard def TV, video recorder, freeview and an xbox 360.

What I have set up now is:
TV is connected to the dz230 and freeview with separate scart cables.

Freeview is then connected to VCR with scart.

and the xbox is connected via a composite cable to the TV...

Now of course the dvd player works in full surround.

However, when I change the input to TV, i get sound through only one speaker (front left) I have no idea how to get 5.1 through it.
I've tried everything I can think of, it's sending me insane!!

HDMI is out of the question cos my TV's rubbish.
Can you guys help?

Many thanks and Happy New Year!

Freeview to AV1 Scart on TV

Sony 230 to AV2 Scart on TV

Go into TV's menu and assign AV2 for audio output

The scart on the 230 is AV out / Audio in

Thanks for the quick reply!

OK I had it set up as you said freeview in AV1 and 230 in AV2.

Doesn't look like I can set audio output to AV2 in the TV settings, there's no option for it...
(It's a Panasonic TX-32DK2)

What I'm doing at the moment is putting the TV's channel onto AV1, then switching the 230 over to TV to get the sound which comes out of one speaker.
I'm close, but not close enough, just want all speakers to work...

Can you help my annoying problem?

even if you got all the speakers to work, you wont get 5.1 from the tv,or the 360.
the best you will get,is stereo, with and possibly, use of the rear speakers, like echo.
