Sony Ht-k250 Home Theater System - Connection of DVD / VCR Combi Player

On behalf of my next door neighbour.

A Sony SLV-D950G DVD/VCR Combi is faulty and has to be replaced. She has substituted it with a equivanent Panasonic unit and asked me to install it for her. However I can't get any sound from the Sony HT-K250 Home Theatre system via Digital Coaxial lead connected to the SONY 'AUX' input. [The faulty Sony DVD had an 'Optical' DVD input which the Panny does not have].

Having studied the Sony HT instruction booklet I noted 2 statements viz:

1. "Settings for when you use Sony DVD player".....in the 'Connecting components with digital audio output jacks' section.

2. " You can select Sony components only" in the 'Listening to the Sound of Connected Components' section.

Does this mean I cannot connect up a Panny unit

Any advise / comments welcome
