Unhappy bluray playback problems

today iv just tried to play a bluray and it just says "reading" then after a while "error" then ejects the disc.

i was trying to play my harry potter bluray set (have played them before without any problems) i tried it several times and the disc seems perfect. then tried several others form the HP box set same results.

i then tried several of my other blurays which i know i have played fairly recently and worked flawlessly: challet girl, stargate, breaking dawn, and i am number 4. non would work and reproduced the same error. until i tried i think it was breaking dawn (not fully sure) and it managed to load even though it seemed to take a while to load.
so i tried one of the others and same problem so i tried the HP movie again and manage to get it to load. it is currently playing.

i janked out the network cable incase of it being that that was the problem but that did not seem to solve the problem (at lease not in the few i tried after removal - unless it took several attempts at reading blurays to realise it was disconnected?)

further when i told the player to check if there was an update (in case a new update had been applied between now and when they worked fine at xmas etc) but i get an error about being unable to connect to the lg site to check for an update. will try later on.

i then remembered several weeks ago i had the same problem with a rented copy of tron legacy (a google eventually suggested it was due to it being a disney bluray problem with them releasing those with rented stamped on the disc - after looking into it a bit more someone got disney blurays to play by turning off the player with the disc in the drive and powering it on again it should read it (i think i tried it twice and it worked). i assumed it was a one off problem due to it being a problem with that movie and being a rental disc.

anyone have any ideas, is it a failing bluray laser?
i will try setting the bd connection to prohibited as someone suggested earlier, and also will try assigning a STATIC ip as i think both of them may have been changed due to a change of router.
oh and the unit i believe is still in warranty.

please help i was over the moon with this until this happened, im having a rough week with my electricals! (possible tv issue as well!).

Weird... however the same issue is happenign to me also but with some DVDs... however most of them just play normally... Try a clean up disc, if it keeps failing the laser could be at an end, if you still have warrant use it, dont delay it.

Finally managed to get some time to fiddle, i reset any setting iv knowingly changed recently (unsure how recently or if they have an impact).
Plugged ethernet cable back in.
Set a static ip.
Bd live back to partially permitted.
Disc menu back to original
Disc audio back to, original

system will now context to lg to check for update - non reported.
system info:
Main ver: hb.8.31.364.c
Servo ver: h80603 (h08san)

Is they went way to know of iv updated recently? As that would indicate it was an update that's caused this? Any way to know that for sure?

Tried all the blurays again n some worked then wouldn't work, it seems it work with breaking dawn then some others work after that then others fail. Not sure if it's just random. But i am number 4 consistently fails n breaking dawn seems to work. The rest iv listed it doesn't appear to be consistent.
Oh, just noticed the, error on screen says check disc.i only noticed that on the player it said error didn't notice the check disc message earlier.

So do we think it's failing? Should i contact lg n beg them to fix it? No where seems to have stock anymore so can't return for refund n just get another. (besides nothing else seems to come close to this system).

An update on the "remembering last viewed location" when swapping discs around - for some reason this seems to be working now. Possibly related to a software update? Been viewing various box-sets and now remembers where I left off after swapping discs around - sorted!

Been having the same problems as chezybezy - got the "check disc" error message on two discs, a Blu-ray and a DVD. Both of which were brand new.
I have the same firmware version, so perhaps it is this causing the problem? Curiously all the firmware on LG's website seems to have been taken down.

Hello there, looking for a bit of help & advice.

I've had this unit for just over 12 months and loved it to bits. Recently though It's started to have problems with play back of Blu rays & DVD's,freezing, stuttering and refusing to play. Fortunately it's insured and I had it repaired and sent back yesterday, only there's no change and it's still got the same problems. They came back out today stuck a DVD in it which booted up, declared there's nothing wrong with it and buggered off! They reckon they've replaced the laser, however it's still stuttering , freezing etc. Could this possibly be a firm ware problem?

Thanks in advance.

Seems like several people are having similar problems. I emailed their support about it and they believe it could be a firmware problem. They asked for a list of titles which I'd experienced problems with so they could pass it on - hopefully it's getting sorted!

Thanks for coming back to me. I did update a month ago or so and the problems started afterwards so it does seem possible. It's so damn frustrating, where do I go from here? I'm now stuck with a machine that's barley functioning with no recourse as it's not a mechanical fault. Makes me wonder why they replaced the laser in the first place?

At the moment I'm just holding tight and hoping they put new firmware up soon! There doesn't appear to be any to download on the UK page at the moment, so perhaps a sign they are aware of the problem?
In the meantime you could try sending them an email. The more info they have on these problems, the better!

Just thought I'd update you with current events. I finally got my player back today from repair after they'd gave it back to me still non functioning. The good news is it now works perfectly, the interesting thing is that my firmware has been changed from HB 831 364 C to HB 831 323 C. I'm not sure if this is a new update or if they've downgraded it, if that's the right expression, to an earlier version. So it looks as though it may indeed be the firmware update that has caused the problems.
