I am thinking of buying the Sony HT-DDWG800, but it is really big.

I have a wooden TV cabinet, to match the rest of the furniture in my room, and the shelves are not big enough for the receiver.

My only options are to put it on the floor beside the cabinet or put it on top of the cabinet with a 42" Sony Bravia on top of it?

Would it be ok with the TV on top of it?

Is there anything similar spec/price but smaller in size?
Is it worth waiting another 6 weeks to the January sales?

The top of the DDWG800 amp is more or less completely covered by ventilation holes, so it would not be advisable to stand a TV directly on top of it (it would probably struggle supporting the weight too) or even put it in enclosed shelving if there is not enough room for air circulation above the amp.

It may be worth looking at the HT-SS100 or HT-SS360, if it is a Sony system that you're after? Specs are similar to the DDWG800, although they both have passive subs instead of the DDWG800's active sub and the speakers are arguably not so good (and not upgradable) as the DDWG800's. On the plus side, these units will probably fit in your TV cabinet.
