high definition sound

Hi,

I Apologize if this sounds dumb, but have got a Panasonic home sound system with built in DVD player, but it does not have blue-ray.

If I brought a blue-ray DVD player and connected it to the TV via HDMI and then connected the TV to the sound system via HDMI, would I get high definition sound, or do I need a blue-ray player sound system?

Many Thanks.

No you wouldnt , most TV's dont have a HDMI out , they are usually inputs , HDMI is one way , each port is either an input or an output , not both.

In addition , most TV's do not pass multichannel audio on any audio outputs they may have , most usually just do stereo.

HD audio requires that the receiving device has decoders for that particular signal , so you need an amp with DD tru HD or DTS MA HD capabilities onboard , no DVD player that I know of has those.

So to get HD audio , you need either a blu ray all in one system , or an AV receiver with HD audio capabilities , just having HDMI slots does mean that any device has HD audio capabilities.

Re: high definition sound

Hey,

Thanks for the reply.

The problem is that we want to watch blue-ray films as that was the point of the getting the TV.

So if we connected a blue-ray dvd player to the tv via HDMI (to get high definition films) and then connected the tv to the sound system via a red and white aux cable would we get standard surround sound (non-hd) or stereo through 5 speakers or even no sounds at all?

Again, Many Thanks.

Re: high definition sound

Straight to the TV and you would get HD pictures with stereo sound , depending on the blu ray player model you may have the option of optical or co-ax to the surround for Dolby digital or DTS or alternatively yes you can feed a stereo signal to the amp and use one of the pseudo fake surround options like prologic or neo.

Will go with the optical cable for the surround sound.

Thank you very much for all the help!
