Some speakers for new TV

Hi all,

I have a new LCD tv, blue ray and sky HD but no decent sound.

Just decorated the room, so dont want to be running cables up walls etc... so was thinking of a 2.1 system to stay by the TV.

So I guess I will need and amp and the speakers?

I only want to spend a few hundred, but needing an amp will bump it up to maybe £400 ?

What suggestions do you guys/girls have?

I'm sure there will be a few suggestions forthcoming shortly but how about this onkyo set-up?

Also, check this thread out, going down the stereo amp and 2 decent speaker route might be more in line with your requirement?

I guess you need to decide if you want to do some sort of decoding for films or is music listening more important?

All the best
D

Re: Some speakers for new TV

I really dont know anything about decoding etc....?

All I want is decent sound from Sky HD and my Bluray player.

Not worried about music.

So was thinking that Onkyo unit just takes a feed from the Sky and Bluray and produces nice sounds

Ok, no worries. Put simply decoding is the amp doing a bit work to decide which speaker to send various effects to, like a bullet whistling from one side of the room (Speaker) to other for example. If you just bought a stereo amp you simply would not get that level of effect.

As you're not bothered about music then perhaps the onkyo system's the one for you. It's a 2.1 with the AV amp build into the sub, basically it ticks all the boxes in terms of the what you said you wanted in your initial post.

Whether you think the Onkyo system produces a "decent" sound is completely subjective. The two front speakers appear to be quite small so I don't imagine they will fill a big room particularly well, even with the sub filling in.

Best thing to do is get a demo with a dealer and hear for yourself if it's for you.

All the best

Hi,

My room is only about 5m long and 2.5m wide where the TV is. Its about 5m wide a bit further back down the room, 'L' shape. But all in all, its tiny, lol. I would have thought they would fill the room ok, the standard speakers in the TV do an OK job, so anythings an upgrade really.

Unless I find something bigger, now I know what im looking for, but done want to waste money on something that over the top!

Thanks for the help

Evening Rodders,

I don't know anything about the sony 2.1 you mention. Upon doing a quick search on these very forums it doesn't appear to be pulling anything up, which is not necessarily a bad sign but I doubt it's a good one either.

In my opinion sticking with the same manufacturer is totally unimportant in this case.

For all the feedback you need on the Onkyo, skim through this dedicated thread

All the best and good luck

Whereabouts are you based? There should be a dealer relatively near you selling the Onkyo I would have thought

A quick google should point you in the right direction methinks.

Hey, you never know, you might be blown away by the sony. All I would say is you don't know how impressive anything is until you've heard at least 2 systems so that you can authoritatively benchmark.

Good luck
