As SilverBlue says, in real terms there is not really an issue with using different/extended wires in an electrical sense.
The only "problem" with extending the wires that I can think of is that it's a proprietary moulded plug on the head-unit end of it - very slim plugs, all channels are tightly packed together.
There's no way you can get your current wires into the box unless you attach your existing wiring to the chopped off ends of the the wires from the plug (if that makes sense)... All a bit of a botch job!
