As far as I am aware, the limitation is with the DLNA specification on the TV and not the PC software. XBMC and Windows 7 have perfectly good DLNA servers and the TV won't play MKV files from them either .

The Xbox 360 WILL play some stuff that the TV won't. i.e. WMV stuff. Although this is out of the DLNA spec
AFAIK, Microsoft were obviously keen to have people using WMV so enabled it. Again, no MKV dice though.
