That's what I thought. something to do with True hd or Dolby digital in bluerays. I might be wrong here but they can't pass over an optical connection cos it's too restrictive. You have to HDMI straight into a suitably rated amp and then to telly

Paulflee I can't remember what the options are but you could try disabling some of the sound settings in the ps3 and see if you can get the standard 5.1 sound to pass through (i.e. it might be possible do disable the signal your telly can't pass through )

Hope this helps as it's just about all I know about sound

Edit: It's the new lossless formats it struggles with - Dolby True HD and DTS-master audio
