The way I see it,
if there's an announcement next week (particularly with it being so close to Nikon's unveiling of the D700) it could go one of two ways IMO
Scenario 1: Damage limitation "yep it's basically a FF 40D, but the longer we left this in R&D, the higher our users' expectations will be, and also the D700 will have had longer time to muscle into this niche market"
Scenario 2: Smug Canon
"well, D700 is nice but check
this out!"
My gut feeling is that if it was just going to be a FF 40D, they would have unveiled it prior to the D700 - announcing something like this so soon
after the D700 would be a little desperate I think

Would still snap up a FF 40D in a flash though
