Samsung 3Dtv with Onkyo TX-SR608 HDMI issue-FIXED

There appears to be a problem with Samsungs 3d TVs with the latest AV Receiver ONKYO TX SR608.

I've reported my issue to Samsung via their online support, they sent an engineer after a factory reset and install of the latest firmware 1013 did not solve the problem.

This same problem has been mentioned in other threads but unless you look at them (the title might not be your TV) you may not find them.
http://www.avforums.com/forums/3d-lc...dmi-issue.html

http://www.avforums.com/forums/3d-lc...rs-thread.html

With other forum members mentioning this and the Samsung engineer who came out to 'fix' mine stated he'd seen the same problem with the same two products at the beginning of this week. i thought I'd create a common thread highlighting the issue.

The problem is with the HDMI handshaking between the two units.

Initially everything is fine until you turn off the AV Receiver followed by putting the TV into standby.
Once the SR608 is turned off it's not recognised by the TV the 2nd time around when you turn the TV back on followed by the 608.

In my case the Onkyo is connected to HDMI port2 and after you turn it off. (TV into standby) turn on the TV, then the SR608 is not recognised and HDMI slot3 appears in the top source menu even though nothings connected.

The TV then looks for the connection and then states no cable connected.
The workaround, as found by others, is to simply switch off the TV, unplug from the wall, then turn it all back on again. Everything is fixed.

It would appear that if you do not turn off the SR608 and only have it in standby mode, the TV does not have a problem with it. Its only when you switch off the AV receiver does the problem manifest itself.

Mines a UE40C8000, The samsung engineer said the other this week was a UE46C8000.
Spursman1 has the same issue with his UE46C7000 and the 608 along with Max7 who has reported the problem in a thread about his UE55 and the 608. Antlane mentions he has the same problem with his 46c7000 but doesn't mention the 608.

The engineer is reporting it to headquaters and hopefully a firmware update will come out of this.

Interesting as i've got a 608 and 55C8000 in boxes ready to be connected. Seems very odd its only these particular models. I suppose if I used my Harmony 1000 remote could I not configure it to switch the amp on first?

Just got the 55C8000, as I have the 607 that I am using to switch any HDMI 1.3 based sources and it's doing exactly the same thing.

Fingers crossed Samsung come up with something fast!

Slightly off topic but fairly new to HDMI, what type / version HDMi cable should I be using to connect my amp to the TV? Do I need one of these new 1.4 or does it matter?!

Just wondering if this issue is with the Onkyo 608 receiver rather than the Samsung TV? I hope not since only the Samsung TV allows user upgradeable firmware. I trust connecting the bluray directly to the TV works fine? Has anyone else tried a different brand of 3D Bluray player and do they experience the same HDMI handshake issues?

As posted, my 607 has this, while the Sony BD-S470 I have connected directly to another HDMI port has no issues whatsoever.

ok, so does this indicate it's the Samsung bluray drive being the issue rather than the Samsung TV itself? I have a 608 and just about to order a 55C8000, so want to be sure. I thought the handshake issue is between the Samsung TV and 608. Sounds like a handshake issue with the Samsung Bluray to the TV via the 608.

Wow, so the issue is not confined to the Onkyo receiver, that's actually worse. I really hope Samsung come up with an updated firmware fast. Most people are buying their TVs with for 3D which requires a 1.4 HDMI connection. This would be considered a pretty big issue in my book!

For what it's worth it's not just confined to Samsung, the 1.4 out of the Panny player to the TV work fine but the additional 1.3 HDMI out to my Onkyo 875 is very difficult to get synced! so great picture & sound about 3 times out of 5 attempts!

Hi,
I've had a handshake problem with my current set up (listed below), if I switch on everything in a specific order then all is ok. For my set up I have to switch on my receiver first followed by the source I'm using, then my screen last.

Thought it might be worth a try

I have an onkyo 705 and happily run my xbox 360 and ps3 through the amp to the tv without any issues - however when playing a 3d source on my ps3 i do have a problem as my tv loses the pairing with my amp.

I basically have to switch a HDMi lead when playing ps3 3D games - ie plug the ps3 straight into the TV

Exactly the same issue happened to me with Samsung UA55C7000 and Onkyo TX-SR578. HDMI plugged in to HDMI 2 for ARC on Samsung. All worked fine on setup, then next morning turn the TV on, it doesn't recognise the amp, and it has HDMI3 highlighted in the source (no connection though), and HDMI2 is gone from the list.

Disabling the Anynet+ Auto-On/Off and turning on the amp before the TV has fixed the problem.

Samsung 3D with Onkyo TX-SR308

Again i am having same problems as the other people. TV does not recognise the amp and it does work sometimes when you turn on amp, sky then the tv. However even this is not working each time. Have contacted Samsung and they are sending an engineer round. The other disturbing thing is that when i gave Samsung the serial number they had no record of it. That really is scarey. Will let you know how i get on with the engineer.

Well, its nice to know that a lot of others are experiencing the same issue, and its not just isolated to my set!

Quote:
when i gave Samsung the serial number they had no record of it.
Same thing happened with me! my number is not recognised! they contacted me to resend it, so I did, still not recognised, they now want proof of purchase as they still do not recognise the number! So I sent them a photo of the back of the set with the number and I also invited them to phone me so i could READ out the number to them!! But they want the proof of purchase from Sevenoaks hi Fi where I purchased it. Maybe i've been sold a fake? I've said if its a fake they are more than welcome to take it away and check it with all the packaging, they really do p*** you off sometimes!! Could it be their software has the problem?

I contacted the supplier of my Onkyo and they forwarded the issue to Onkyo. Not sure if Onkyo can resolve it as the 608 doesn't seem to have an upgradeable firmware. However, they might liase with samsung I suppose.

So far nothings appeared on the Samsung website as regards to a fix, I assume the engineer filed his report, so we wait and see, afterall its only been a week or so since it was highlighted, I guess it takes time.
Having said that its also quite unlikely they are monitoring this thread so they may well be blissfully unaware of the issue

I suggest if any engineer looks at your set, you also refer them to this thread!

Samsung engineer came to my house and after speaking with just about everyone in the samsung engineering team, basically advised me to take it back to where I purchased the TV. I subsequently changed it for the same model and low a behold same issue!!!! At=s this was the last straw I got my money back and have recently purchased the slightly smaller 50 inch Panny VT20. No issues found so far.....

Given the issues and workaround i.e. turning the Amp on first - does the issue exhibit itself when using pass through mode i.e. Amp in standby and just repeating the signal to the TV?

Fyi, I currently have a Samsung UE55B7020 and an Onkyo 608 and it works fine. I've never had handshake issues, whether using pass thru mode or full Amp mode. Albeit, I don't have any HDMI 1.4 blu-ray players plugged into it but it sounds like people are just having problems with the connection from the 608 to the TV itself. I really think it's more a TV issue with the new Samsung 3D compatible TVs. I was just about to purchase but want Samsung to iron out the issues first. Hopefully a new firmware is on it's way. Maybe they'll even update support to 1.4a (current 1.4 support only)

Looks like i may well need to buy a new Amp

Dear Jeff

thank you very much for your message and your interest in ONKYO products. You have reached the support/help desk for ONKYO Europe.
For playback of "3D video" is necessary the HDMI version 1.4.
Unfortunately the TX-SR 606 has the HDMI version 1.3.
Also it is unfortunately not possible to upgrade the TX-SR 606 in this issue.

LATEST UPDATE

Samsung have released firmware 1014.3 on 28th june
via their website.
It took a while for the download, busy traffic I guess! but nonetheless, early indications are its a fix for the onkyo 608 issue.

Samsung have a tendancy not to show a change log so its difficult to be sure that it applies.

However, BEFORE I installed it, I rechecked I could create the ERROR and I managed to do it repeatedly using version 1013, so I know the error exists.

AFTER install of the 1014.3, I tried several times to recreate the error and so far it all WORKS fine!

If I turn off the 608, and put the TV in standby, Then procede to turn on the TV, followed by the AV receiver, the source menu shows HDMI2 each time without causing an error. I've tried x8 and the error has not come up.

I'd like to say they've fixed it........

For those willing to download, let us know if yours is fixed to and I'll EDIT the title to include FIXED
