Try the following from Motorola A925, V980 or C975, SE P series (although a good range of phones) or the infamous Nokia Communicator series 9500/9300/9300i. I class those as bricks.
I cut my teeth on a Motorola MR30 with high power battery so most of today's phones are pretty slinky imo.
I put far more importance on a phone's useability which to me translates into good and intuitive OS and UI than the fact it's less than 100mm high, 40mm wide or 10mm thick and weighs less than 60g.
If you want really small then I hear you can buy a Nokia 8210 really cheap from ebay
