I didn't notice the GT50 flicker in the shops, although I didn't spend much time looking for it. It's obvious at home during the day (with the necessary brighter picture settings). In the evening it's hard to spot but is still there.
I've just come from a Sony 5500 which had terrible flashlighting/clouding, so the brief spell with the GT50 has been a revelation with the black levels and uniformity. If it didn't flicker it would be a keeper.
Now that the 853 appears to be plagued with the same old LCD flaws it looks like the Samsung E6500/8000 is the best bet for me. Should have similar PQ to the GT50, no LCD clouding/banding, and no flicker. Looks like the only issues to look out for are buzzing and brightness fluctuations - fingers crossed for a decent panel.
