I agree with all you have just wrote but I think the Stereophile measurements show that spdif can be made to measure exactly the same as async usb and is therefore dealt with effectively.
Benchmark use asrc, dCS use what you described - the point is you can deal with spdif very effectively. I think I'll leave it there, I think we agree that spdif isn't ideal and probably costly to fix properly hence why some manufacturers leave it off.
I do agree with your async usb point of view more than it is coming across but you need to think about what you are connecting it to.
