As an ex-police officer, I fully understand why they (and the fire service) did what they did. How do you know anything about the pond? 3 feet of water is enough to get anyone in trouble - there could have been a further 3 feet of mud under that, which someone could get caught up in and drown themselves. Then you have two drowning people who need rescuing.
Those of you not in the emergency services have no idea what they actually do each day which is above and beyond what they are supposed to do. On one of the days where they actually follow quite sensible advice, that's what gets reported, not the rest of the brave work. What's actually wrong with this country is people love reading about sensationalist crap in the press. Just remember why we have H&S laws in this country - it's because people starting taking each other to court over stupid little things.
