Does anyone know how Nikon / Canon operate their warranty policy in practice ?

I'm looking at purchasing some expensive kit and want to save some money, but I would also would want some fallback if it all went pear shaped.

So if a seller says a D700 or 5DMkII was purchased 9 months ago, but they never registered it, would the next owner be able to register it?

I know these warranties are not strictly transferable.

Assume the gear was purchased in the UK and not a grey import.

Are third party warranties any good ?
